KEL STUDIOS - Kelly Gannon

Okay, peeps, you really do have to check this fellow out! Cartoonist Kelly Gannon ROCKS!! I especially dig his cartoon above.  Amazing Talent and exactly that edge you should be looking for as an Musician for unique marketing and also you may just want to give that special gift that falls within the category of UNIQUE - difficult to pull off in these times! I highly recommend that you contact Kelly to lay down a pic for yourself or for a gift OR hire for a function - Kelly is a sure hit all the way around!

Cartoonist Kelly Gannon's friendly caricatures, humorous illustrations and ramblings....found here:

I want to leave you with one of my fave songs of all time and that is - drum roll please - Johnny Nash: 'I Can See Clearly Now" I don't know what it is about this song, but it never fails me! No matter what is going down in my life I can throw this song on and the world disappears and I walk away at the end of the song with a bounce in my bum! I think I also dig the percussion and horns, the production is so unique! No matter what - I will ALWAYS see clearly looking in the face of that sun-shiny day!

Bob Marley does a killer version of 'I Can See Clearly Now' as well.

THE SURFARI'S - Wipeout

Today in 1963 The Surfari's released 'Wipe Out'.  While they were in the studio recording they had the idea to mimic the sound of a surf board breaking and then brought in their manager to start the song with "ha ha ha ha ha, wipe out." Now who doesn't know whats coming when you hear those words? It is indeed a hook to the song. I always try to find a video from the time of the song but unfortunately this is the only vid that is remotely close to entertaining. The boyz are rockin it out still today:

Can you imagine this? There was actually another band at the exact same time in southern California that called themselves The Surfari's and then when 'Wipe Out' hit the charts they changed their name to The Original Safari's. Now that would be a drag! HOWEVER, I would imagine that they got a great deal more attention as the public would perceive them to be the band that was listed on the charts. Regardless, I can't even imagine how upset I would be if tomorrow someone hit the charts as Netty Mac! You spend a great deal of time honing your craft, image, marketing and getting your music out to the peeps...all to have someone come along and take that image, name & branding? Yep - I would end up in a looney bin 4sure! lol lol
I like the Surfari's but I must confess that these boys don't come close to The Ventures version of their song. It ROCKS and I can't wait to showcase the amazing Mr. Greg Collins (My Drummer - I call him Master Gregee http://www.myspace.com/gregcollinsdrummer) in my show when he does as is done in this vid!

DONNA SUMMER - Bad Girls

Today in 1979 Donna Summer hit No. 1 with her song 'Bad Girls'. She co-wrote the song with Brooklyn Dreams and her inspiration for the song was based true story where a police officer offended one of her assistants because he thought that she was a prostitute.  When the song was completed and presented for recording Donna was asked to give the song to Cher. She refused and put the song away for a couple of years.  The song was extremely popular! It hit the charts for pop, R&B and dance all at the same time right along with her other single Hot Stuff (which is her most successful song)

Donna Summer (LaDonna Adrian Gaines - born Dec 1948) is an American singer, songwriter that hit the charts in many Genre's with her Disco style of writing and performing. She is still on stage putting a bounce in everyone's bum today! 30 years later.

Donna's most popular song was Hot Stuff.

Donna Summer has 5 Grammy's and is acclaimed as the FIRST artist to have 3 consecutive double albums that hit No. 1 on the US Billboard charts. Donna also hit No.1 FOUR times in only 13 months. Wow hey - she was IT!

WAYLON JENNINGS - June 15, 1937

Today in 1937 Waylon Jennings was born. Some folks say he is best known for his TV hit theme song for the Dukes of Hazzard, however I have great difficulty in narrowing down to just one song and a TV program when it comes to Waylon's greatness! This picture is a bit more like it for me:

So lets go with the Dukes of Hazzard thang as one really should give credit where credit is due right? I have fond memories of this show. It aired from  1979 to 1985. Now come on; who has never heard of Bo and Luke Duke or their customized 1969 Dodge Charger: The General Lee - oooh how I would love to lose my license in that car! he he - speeding for those folks not in the know. LOL

Waylon was not only the great singer of the Dukes of Hazzard TV them song 'The Good 'ol Boys", he was also referred to as The Balladeer. He narrated throughout the show. You know I have come to know that I really do like narration in a program - as long as it is good writing! (The Wonder Years is one of my all-time faves when it comes to TV programs). The song hit No. 1 in 1980 and did you know that the TV version was different that the one on the record? Different verses and the TV version has a YeeHaw at the end. I say why didn't they just record and sell it that way? Nothing wrong with a little YeeHaw to end the song right?

WE COULD USE MORE WHOLESOME FAMILIES WITH STRONG MORALS LIKE THE DUKE'S IN TODAY'S' SOCIETY!

Now lets talk a little more about Waylon Jennings - American Singer, Songwriter and Musician. Did you know that he started his career as the bass player for Buddy Holly? He hooked up with Buddy after the Crickets split up.  Also, he was supposed to be on the plane that crashed but gave his seat up to the Big Bopper.

Waylon was also a part of the "Outlaws" which was an unofficial group in Nashville that snubbed the corporate scene.

My personal fond memory of Waylon Jennings (passed in 2002) is his song "Momma Don't Let Your Baby's Grow Up To Be Cowboys". Country classic in my opinion and suspect it will live on forever in the music history books when speaking to the Classic Greats:

Finally, an attestation to Waylon is his contributions to The Highwaymen. Fantastic group of the greats: Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson. Can you just imagine these guyz sitting around on the campfire and laughing and joking around AND with their guitars? I bet they had a blast and I bet it wasn't a family show either! lol

RAY STEVENS - The Streak

Today in 1974 Ray Stevens hit No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart with his song 'The Streak'. This song is about the Britsh craze of streaking at the time. Streaking was a craze? Too funny!!  'The Streak' also hit No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Charts and then No. 3 on the Billboard Top Country Charts. Quite an array of achievements for a song that is about shedding your cloths! Kewl song though:

Another novelty song that Ray recorded was "You Don't Know Me Margaret".  This is a funny song and video that always takes me back to the 70's..."Are you Naked?" - just watching him say the line makes me laugh:

Now we can't forget his song 'Come to the USA' - Funnnneeeeeeee! How true is this song?!! Listen to his humor, the best jokes have a hint of truth behind them and really 'Come to the USA' speaks a truth that is bothersome; it is to me anyway.

ALANIS MORISSETTE - Jagged Little Pill

Today in 1995 Alanis Morissette released 'Jagged Little Pill'. This album was a historical milestone for Canadian music history as it sold over 30 million copies world-wide. Alanis Morissette was the first Canadian Woman to attain a US No. 1 album.  The album spent 12 non-consecutive weeks on the US Billboard  200 Albums Chart and was also ranked by this chart as the number one selling album of the 1990's.  Atta go Alanis! Did you know that there are several versions of this CD and many have 2 hidden tracks? If you have this Album, you may want to plug your CD. In particular, one of these hidden tracks is an A Capella version of 'Your House" - KILLER TUNE!!!!

Singles from Jagged Little Pill
  1. "You Oughta Know"
    Released: July 6, 1995
  2. "Hand in My Pocket"
    Released: October 31, 1995
  3. "Ironic"
    Released: February 27, 1996
  4. "You Learn"
    Released: July 9, 1996
  5. "Head over Feet"
    Released: September 16, 1996
  6. "All I Really Want"
    Released: December 1995
Okay, so yes I usually pick my fave song on the Album, but I really can't here! Seriously! I truly to enjoy all of the singles form the Albums! So I will narrow it down to 2 then. Ironic KiX A$$! (Pun intended on the spelling too! lol lol) I love her expression relating to "it's a Free Ride...it figures" then "10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife":

The next favorite of the favorites would be 'Hand in My Pocket' Especially love the line "I'm sick but I'm Pretty". "What it all comes down to my friends it that Everything is just fine-fine-fine" - No kidding hey? Really, we could use a little Alanis on the airwaves in the millennium don't you think? She reminds me of Melissa Etheridge with her courage to yell out what she thinks and feels but in such a poetic way as to put chapters of information in merely a couple of sentences! I would love to be just like them when I grow up!!!!

Another thing that I dig about Alanis is that she is not only an excellent vocalist and songwriter, but she is very talented on the harmonica.  I have been meaning to take up the Harmonica, maybe after I get my album out there....

This Video is EXCELLENT in telling the story of the the 10-year anniversary of the 'Jagged Little Pill" Album where Alanis went back into the studio to record an acoustic version.

There are so may songs off of this Album that should go in this Blog - but it would be a book then and who has time for that?! This is one of my fave songs on the Album, called 'Perfect'.  This song didn't necessarily hit the mainstream, but I find it amazing; especially knowing that it took a whopping 20 minutes to write and compose from beginning to end! I have several of those songs and can say that it is those that just fall off of the pen like that that end up being the best for getting right inside you!

CYNDI LAUPER - Time After Time

Today in 1984 "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper hit No.1 on the US charts and stayed there for 2 weeks.  Cyndi Lauper and Ron Hyman stayed late after studio sessions to compose the song. It is about Cyndi's life in the studio and life after the studio.  Ron also sang backup vocals.  I didn't know that the song was about being in the studio and it just happens that I am currently in the studio recording my album; interesting how I can listen to a song since 1984 and today it is brand new:

'Time After Time" was nominated for a Grammy in 1984 and was a huge success internationally. I have always quite enjoyed her video for this song. For starters who doesn't conjure up thoughts when we see a Bowler?? lol The vid is about a runaway that is running away from her boyfriend. I especially enjoy the very beginning when she is watching the 1930's movie and holding her ceramic dog that she makes kiss her sleeping boyfriend. Twisted: especially for the 80's!

This song was so popular that it has been covered over 120 times and Miles Davis even did his own rendition of it!

'Time After Time' was the second release on her album 'She's So Unusual' (I think we would all agree to the title hey? lol I think Cyndi ROCKS for walking to the beat of her own drum! AND folks diggin' it through her persistence and endurance of the media digs!).

It happens to me every Spring - I love to listen to Techno music, I don't know what it is, but it just fires me right up! lol  I found this version and dig it! I hope you enjoy it:

I am one of the headliners in a Charity Concert next Thursday and am blasting all of my sites to seek folks that will flap their Angel Wings for us. If we all donated just one dollar - it would be HUGE!

JOHN DENVER - Thank God I'm A Country Boy

Today in 1975 Bob Denver hit No. 1 on the US Singles chart with his best song ever (I love it anyway - it was one of my fave records to dance on my bed to!) 'Thank God I'm a Country Boy'. Well I most certainly learned something new today, I thought all these years that John Denver wrote the song but nope; it was John Martin Summers. John M. Summers was Denver's guitar/fiddle player in the backup band. He wrote it while he was on his way to Los Angeles coming from Aspen Colorado. Yes, no kidding thank God I'm a country boy - that trip would definitely pull that song out of you!Actually he was quoted as speaking about how he was doing in life and it inspired the song: "peaceful, happy and content".

Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. (Dec 31, 1943 - Oct 12, 1977) and as well all know him: John Denver. Now here is one of those rare times where I do believe it was a wise choice or advice to change the name. John Denver was not only a singer/songwriter; he was a HUGE activist and humanitarian.

In his career he released about 300 songs of which about 200 were his own and this earned him 12 Gold and 4 Platinum albums.

I have always enjoyed John Denver's music. It is about as pure as the driven snow! Talk about a Family show. His writing is so wholesome and he had such a way with words that he could put paragraphs worth of information into ONE sentence. Amazing writer AND human being for the well-being of our earth!

I would have to say the best song he ever wrote (in my books) was 'Take Me Home, Country Roads".  It just fills the heart right up to the brim!
